I'm just getting started, and I have a few questions regarding the drug I'm on. I have been taking proton pump inhibitor meds for about a year and have gained weight. I don't know if this is true of all of my other medications. Is there a specific medication that can help me kick the "good" acid reflux?

    Thanks,

    Josie

I've been taking proton pump inhibitor meds for a year and have gained weight.

    Hi!

I have been on an over-the-counter (OTC) proton pump inhibitor for about a year now. My question is, is there any difference between the drug I take for proton pump inhibitor and other medications (e.g. Nexium, Prilosec, etc.)?

I am on omeprazole for heartburn, and protonix for ulcer. Both have been effective in preventing stomach ulcers, but omeprazole is a bit more expensive. I was taking it for gastroesophageal reflux disease, and omeprazole for ulcers, but no one suggested it. I am on esomeprazole for GERD, and it's been helping a bit with acid reflux. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, but it's probably worth it.

    Thanks for your input!

I have used this medication before and it has been very effective for me. It helped me get the stomach to heal, and it has helped with the reflux. I am on omeprazole for ulcers and Protonix for heartburn, but omeprazole for GERD does not seem to be effective. I'm not a fan of Nexium. I don't have any experience with PPIs, and Nexium is not an NSAID. I have taken PPIs for 2 weeks, and I found it to be effective for me. It took about 2 weeks of taking it for the ulcer to heal, and then after 2 weeks it healed itself. It also helps with the stomach to heal and to reduce the amount of acid the ulcer produces, which is what I would expect. I'm wondering if there are any other medications that help with acid reflux.

I know this is a very sensitive question, and I don't want to sound like I'm trying to give you a quick response. I'm taking omeprazole (Nexium), and I am concerned about the acid reflux side effects that I might be seeing. I am doing so because my stomach is getting too upset, which can lead to ulcer formation, and I am getting acid in my esophagus from the stomach.

It is also possible that protonix is working in my system to help me, and that I am getting more acid out of my esophagus from the stomach. However, omeprazole should not be taken in conjunction with these two medications.

I am thinking about trying to keep omeprazole as a standalone drug, because the side effects are more likely to occur. I would like to keep omeprazole as a part of my treatment plan. My stomach can get really upset with a stomach pain or upset. I am worried about the long term effects on my gut and digestive system. I'm going to keep taking it as long as possible, and hope to get some relief in a few weeks.

Thanks for all the great questions!
